Don’t ignore the caffeine in matcha

I don’t know why, but many people assume that Matcha contains no or very little caffeine, or they completely ignore the fact that Matcha, as a tea product, contains caffeine.

Matcha not only contains caffeine, but the content is higher than regular green tea.

The caffeine content in tea leaves not only depends on the tea variety, climatic conditions and brewing method, but also on the picking time of the leaves and the growth period of the leaves. The older the leaves, the lower the caffeine content.

Therefore, matcha contains higher amounts of caffeine than other green teas. Generally, the caffeine content of green tea is 11.3-24.67mg/g, and the caffeine content of matcha is 18.9-44.4mg/g. [Generally, the caffeine content in coffee beans is 10-12mg/g. This value is for reference only, just to give everyone an idea.

To make a 240ml cup of matcha, you usually use about 2-4g of matcha powder.

As for other matcha desserts, I looked through the recipes for matcha cream rolls, matcha ice cream, and matcha cakes in the kitchen. I calculated that the matcha content in each cake (roll) and each box of ice cream is about 0.5-3g.

Doing the math, this caffeine content cannot be ignored. If you eat more, you may end up with more caffeine than drinking a large cup of coffee.

As for prepackaged foods with matcha added, some will indicate the mass fraction of matcha powder in the ingredient list, so you can roughly calculate the caffeine content yourself.
